Crown Reduction

Reducing the outer crown of the tree without affecting the density of the crown. This is carried out for a number of reasons. To reduce the sail area of the tree which resists the wind. To lesson the stress/weight on weak parts of the tree or just to simply make the tree a more aesthetic shape.

Crown Thin

This is the removal of small limbs throughout the trees canopy.  The process reduces the trees sail without affecting the trees overall shape and size. Crown thinning allows the wind to pass though with less resistance and also allows more light through the crown.

Crown Lifting

Carried out by the removal of the trees lower branches. This will allow more light to the areas closer to the tree. Also crown lifting may be needed to allow easier access under the canopy .

Tree Removal

This is the removal of the whole tree to ground level. Such as by straight felling (where the space allows) or by dismantling the tree in sections, where space is at minimum.

Target Pruning

This is when a tree has a specific area that is posing or has the potential of posing a risk. It can be pruned so it will be no longer a problem. An example of this would be if a limb is over hanging a neighbour's property. If the branch is allowed to grow for too long, it may fail and cause damage. So the limb can be either removed or reduced using advanced aerial rigging techniques, so that the limb is no longer an issue.

Deadwooding

Although deadwood in a tree is not always a sign of  the tree being unhealthy, deadwood is most likely to pose a danger to people or things below it. This process involves careful removal of major deadwood that could potentially cause damage.

Pollarding

Pollarding is a relatively servere reduction on a tree for the first time. However, only certain species like willow, poplar and lime can cope with this procedure and can be an effective way of maintaining the tree. Once a tree has been pollarded, it will need to be re-pollarded every 1 - 5 years depending on the size of the tree desired.

Hedge Management

Hedges range in all shapes and sizes and serve many different purposes. Hedges can vary in their levels of maintenance from twice a year, so that the hedge is always in good form. Whereas others can be done once a year, where the aesthetics of the hedge isn't as important or it doesn't grow as fast. Either way Elderwood Tree Care has the correct equipment, knowledge and experience to carry out this work to a high standard. As well as maintaining hedges we also offer hedge reductions, where the height is brought down to a more manageable level. Once again though some hedges respond better to this than others. However we must consider the correct time of year to carry out this work from species to species. Nesting birds can be a big factor in deciding this, as it is an offence to cause damage to or disturb nesting birds in accordance with the Wildlife and countryside Act 1981. This is however, only when there is a nest present.

Stump Treatment

After a tree has been felled or dismantled, the only thing that is left is the stump. This can be kept at a certain height to become a feature in the garden, for pots or bird houses to be placed on. However more often than not, they are rather inconvenient. They could be a pain while cutting the grass, in the way of a new development or just look rather unsightly. Some species of tree can even start to grow back by sending out new shoots. However we do have some different solutions for solving this problem.

Stump Poisoning

This procedure is a cheaper option than stump grinding as we don't need to use any additional machinery. There are two ways of poisoning the stump. One is by scoring around the cambium layer with a chainsaw, and a liquid poison is carefully applied. Two, is the use of eco plugs (see picture below). Holes are drilled at intervals around the cambium and then the plugs are inserted. Both methods are designed to stop the tree from re-growing and the stump will then decay over time.

Stump Grinding

Depending on the access to the stump will determine the size of machine we can use, whether it is a tracked machine or a smaller pedestrian one. These machines grind out the stump so that it is fully below ground level.  All that is left, once the procedure is finished, is mulch. This then will degrade over time.
